2025 Royal Live Oaks Academy of the Arts & Sciences BOARD

In accordance with our By-Laws, RLOA is ready to conduct its annual election of Board members to ensure that all stakeholders have a role in the governance of the school.  As representatives of the school, the students, and the community, RLOA Board members bring a diverse set of skills and backgrounds that represent a broad area of expertise.  Those who choose to serve on the Board do so because they believe strongly in the mission of RLOA and commit to the role of an ambassador for the school.   Ballots will be available through the online link on our website or social media pages.  All ballots must be submitted no later than December 19, 2025.  After that time the election will be closed and the ballots sealed until the January 28, 2025 Board Meeting.  

Four members are up for re-election this year.. The individuals elected will serve for the next two years, beginning January 2025.  Below are the names of the 4 candidates up for re-election.  You must choose a total of 4 candidates whether you write in a name or not.   Staff members are not eligible to serve.  One vote will be allowed for each enrolled student.  Additionally, each employee of the school will receive one vote.

Ballots will be opened and tallied by the Board Treasurer Dr. Marva Tigner at the January 27, 2026 Board Meeting in open session.  The results will be announced at that meeting, publicized through the school’s website, social media, and email.  The 4 newly elected Board members will begin to serve in January 2026 for a 2-year term. 

CANDIDATE BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Karla Carrion is a parent of two RLOA students. She was born in Lima, Peru and has lived in the USA with her family for 27 years. She is employed in a dentist office. Mrs. Carrion is a dedicated parent who believes it is important for parents to have an active role in their children’s education.

Leslie Hunter has been an educator in South Carolina for 25 years.  She began her teaching career in Berkeley County teaching fourth grade and then moving to middle school. Once moving to Bluffton, she taught for two years in Jasper County, again teaching fourth grade and one year in middle school.  Most of her teaching career took place at Cross Schools in Bluffton teaching second grade for 16 years. Currently she is a homeschool teacher for other families in Jasper County.  She truly believes that every child deserves the best education possible.  Solid communication and teamwork between parents, teachers, and administration is key to a child’s academic success. 

Jake Morton is a native of Jasper County, a former teacher, and a business owner in the home service industry.  His family has been in the LowCountry since the 1950s.  Jake understands the value of investing in our children’s future and serving others.  One of his grandchildren attends RLOA.

Joan Rountree was an educator for 32 years with a Masters degree in Education. She retired in 2008. She taught her first nine years at Ridgeland Elementary school and finished her career at Shell Point Elementary in Beaufort. During her teaching career, she was a classroom teacher, teaching grades one through four; she taught a writing lab for grades two through five, and was a literacy coach for grades one through five. She received the honor of representing. Shell Point Elementary as Teacher of the year in 1999. Mrs. Rountree is currently serving on the Board as the Board Secretary. She provided valuable insight when she served on the Construction Committee in the construction of the new campus.

De acuerdo con nuestros Estatutos, RLOA está lista para llevar a cabo su elección anual de miembros de la Junta Directiva para garantizar que todas las partes interesadas participen en la gobernanza de la escuela. Como representantes de la escuela, los estudiantes y la comunidad, los miembros de la Junta Directiva de RLOA aportan una diversidad de habilidades y trayectorias que abarcan una amplia área de especialización. INFORMACIÓN SOBRE LOS ANTECEDENTES DEL CANDIDATO

Karla Carrión es madre de dos estudiantes de RLOA. Nació en Lima, Perú, y ha vivido en Estados Unidos con su familia durante 27 años. Trabaja en una clínica dental. Es una madre dedicada que cree en la importancia de que los padres participen activamente en la educación de sus hijos.

Leslie Hunter ha sido educadora en Carolina del Sur durante 25 años. Comenzó su carrera docente en el condado de Berkeley, donde impartió clases de cuarto grado y luego pasó a la secundaria. Tras mudarse a Bluffton, impartió clases durante dos años en el condado de Jasper, impartiendo nuevamente cuarto grado y un año en secundaria. La mayor parte de su carrera docente la desarrolló en Cross Schools en Bluffton, donde impartió clases de segundo grado durante 16 años. Actualmente, es maestra de educación en casa para otras familias del condado de Jasper. Cree firmemente que cada niño merece la mejor educación posible. La comunicación sólida y el trabajo en equipo entre padres, maestros y administración son clave para el éxito académico de un niño.

Jake Morton es originario del condado de Jasper, exmaestro y empresario del sector de servicios a domicilio. Su familia reside en el LowCountry desde la década de 1950. Jake comprende el valor de invertir en el futuro de nuestros hijos y de servir a los demás. Uno de sus nietos asiste a RLOA.
